Many of us have experienced feeling jealous of someone else’s “perfect” life while going through their social media influencer’s Instagram profile. But in reality, these online personas are the result of many hours of labor and, in some cases, entire teams of individuals. Rianne Meijer, an Amsterdam-based vlogger, shares a series of side-by-side photos in an effort to shed light on what it really takes to take “flawless” photos. These photos show that it takes more than just a quick snapshot—all it’s about getting the right angle, having good lighting, and picking the right filter.
Meijer is undeniably attractive and fashionable, but her collection of humorous “Instagram vs reality” photos shows that, like everyone else, she’s prone to taking unflattering photos. Her photographs are completely realistic and serve as a reminder that we are all human, whether she is in the middle of a yawn or squinting from the sun on her face. “I chose to share them because I believed it would be unfair to display only the ‘ideal’ photographs. Meijer said, “And I figured it might make some folks feel better about themselves. “I hope people think about these postings I did and remember that those photographs are almost never as great as they seem when they see perfect pictures of attractive girls and start to feel insecure. Naturally, I also wanted to make people laugh.
